Volia, which is now part of the DVL (Datagroup-Volia-lifecell) Group of Companies, has been conducting large-scale construction of an energy-resistant gigabit GPON network since May 2024. By the end of the year, the planned number of homes connected using this technology will double.
The construction of the GPON network is the largest for Volia since 2021. To launch it, a pilot project was previously successfully conducted in one of the districts of the city of Kyiv. It made it possible to make the necessary calculations and plan further steps. According to them, a total of UAH 1.5 billion will be invested in the project over three years.
The first wave of construction involves the modernization of the existing DOCSIS network, so this year work is underway in the cities that have the highest concentration of Volia subscriber connections using this technology – Lviv, Vinnytsia, and Kyiv. The second wave is modernizing the FTTB technology. However, for the city of Kharkiv, which has exactly such a network, the company is carrying out building this year as well, as this city suffers from Russian shelling and is in dire need of providing residents with the Internet in case of de-energization.
“Network energy resilience is a critical wartime challenge, and we work with it systematically,” says Mykhailo Shelemba, CEO of the DVL Group of Companies, which includes Volia. “We connect additional power to the equipment, reserve key nodes. And at the same time, we are actively building a modern GPON network, which is able to provide Ukrainians with access to the Internet, in addition to high speed, even in blackouts. This is one of our most important priorities for the next three years.”
The network modernization takes into account the need for power backup in the event of power outages and the availability of the necessary capacity to connect to the Internet at speeds up to 1 Gbit/s for a large number of subscribers. Volia uses modern equipment from Nokia, including for connecting end users. This ensures better quality and reliability in the service provision.
Switching existing users to the upgraded Volia network comes at no extra cost. In order to use the company’s services when there is no electricity, subscribers need to take care of the backup power of the router and end equipment installed in the apartment. At the same time, the router characteristics should support the ability to receive Internet at speeds up to 1 Gbit/s. You can select and purchase the appropriate model with the help of Volia specialists.
Recall that among the main advantages of accessing the Internet with GPON are greater reliability of connection and a stable signal, high speed (up to 1 Gbit/s), an optical line that is connected directly to the apartment, energy independence: the Internet can also work in the absence of electricity (provided that the user has backup power of their equipment).
